Mount Toubkal trek 2 days
MOUNT TOUBKAL ASCENT

2 Days / 1 Night

2 day trek mt Toubkal ascent, an ascent of 2 days trek with an overnight stay in a mountain refuge and an early morning set off for the Toubkal summit, provides marvelous moments observing the silent beauty of the rocks lit up with the sun’s first rays.

The path leading from Imlil directly to Jebel Toubkal is a perfect choice for those who want to get straight on top.

Mount Toubkal is North Africa’s highest mountain. It has been a target for mountain climbers since the 1920’s when the Club Alpin Francis founded a branch in Casablanca and European adventurers started discovering High Atlas Mountains.

Mount Toubkal stands at 4167 metres above sea level and is the highest in North Africa and west of the Nile River.

Jbel or Jebel means Mountain and with its neighbouring peak of Ouanoukrim at 4088 metres form the Toubkal Massif. For half of the year it is usually covered in snow and although not classed as a technical climb, it does require crampons and ice axe for the ascent in winter. There are several faces and routes to the summit, it is however unsafe for those who do not know the paths well. As of 2019, Mountain Guides are now compulsory.

Winds can reach gale-force suddenly near the summit so great care must be exercised while at or near the summit. At that altitude oxygen levels are around 60%, therefore we generally stay no more than 45 mins at the summit for the photos and admiring the incredible panoramic views that can reach to the Sahara desert.

We offer winter and summer treks, either just to the summit, part of a circuit and also as part of a multi-day trek including Berber villages and valleys. They range in endurance, difficulty and length. The trail head village of Imlil has several places where you can hire gear and you should inform us if this is an option you are interested in. In summer you can also choose to camp and we supply all the tentage.

Anyone with a reasonable level of fitness can climb Toubkal; we offer treks that give you a few days to acclimatize before the summit bid.

Mount Toubkal should perhaps be considered the cherry on the top of a very large cake and best enjoyed as part of a trek that takes you to authentic remote villages and valleys where you can enjoy the local hospitality, culture and learn about the history of the Amazigh people that inhabit the region.

Mount Toubkal trek 2 days Itinerary

Day 1Marrakech – Imlil – Sidi Chamcharouch – Toubkal refuge

You will be picked up from your hotel in Marrakech around 8:00 am. Our driver will take you to Imlil (1740m), a Berber village located about 65 km south from Marrakech, where our trek will start. Here we will meet the Berber muleteer crew. An experienced mountain guide will take you on a walk through the Berber villages via the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch (2500m) to reach the mountain hut. Here we will stop for a picnic lunch. After enjoying the lunch and having a short break, we will continue towards the refuge (3200 m). A glass of tasty mint tea will be served for you there. Hot shower will be available to wash off the dust from your body and freshen up for the next day. In the evening a traditional Moroccan meal will be prepared for dinner. During summer months there is an option to spend a night in the tent.

Day 2Toubkal refuge – Summit – return to Imlil

The next day starts with an early wake up to escape from the full power of the Sun. Breakfast is served around 5:00 am. We will begin the ascent climb at 5:30 am. In the middle of our climb we will stop for a short break with some refreshments – water, oranges and nuts. After walking uphill for some 3-4 hours, we will be able to enjoy a picturesque view of all the High Atlas Mountains, valleys and Berber villages. When reaching the summit, we will have a break of 45 minutes to take pictures and enjoy the magnificent view. Afterwards we will return back to the hut, where the lunch will be awaiting for us. To get back to Imlil we will follow the same route down the hill where we end our Mount Toubkal trek 2 days.
